Blueberries for India
1. Size of plant for planting in the field. One or 2 year plant grown in a1literor 3.5 liter container respectively.
Stem length should be 15 to 25cm and 25 to 45respectively.
2. Plant spacing 80 cm. in row and 2.75 meter aisles.
3. Blueberry plants are a bush type plant growing stems from the crown of the plants.
Number of productive stems should be 8 to 12. Pruning is done yearly removing canes that are 5 to 6 years old.
4. Plant any time of the year providing there is adequate irrigation.
5. Plants will begin producing fruits in the 2nd or 3rd season of growth. The plants produce one time per year.
6. There are many cultivars to choose. Every cultivar will produce for a period of 3 to 4 weeks harvesting weekly.
7. The first harvest one can expect 1 kilo per plant. Every year thereafter, the plant will double in yield until the 6th year of maturity.
The optimum yield could be as high as 10 kilo per plant. Average yield is 5 kilo per plant.
8. Plants will produce one crop per season.
9. The fruits are firm. Depending upon the cultivar, the fruits can be stored for more than 14 days in temperatures 2 to 4 degrees C.
10. Approximately 85% of the fruits can be marketed for the fresh market, 15% of the fruits will go to frozen markets.
11. After the harvest, remove all canes that produced fruit and harvest will begin in August thru September.
12. Repeat the steps every year thereafter.
